Caltrans Sustainable Communities Grants

Caltrans is pleased to release the FY 2019-20 Grant Application Guides and call-for-applications for State and federal funding, as well as grant funding from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair & Accountability Act of 2017.

The Sustainable Communities Grants will provide $29.5 million in funding to local and regional multimodal transportation and land use planning projects that further local Sustainable Communities Strategies, contribute to the State’s GHG reduction targets, and also assist in achieving the Caltrans Mission and Grant Program Overarching Objectives.

Competitive Grants: A total of $17 million will be distributed through a competitive program to Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) with a sub-applicant(s), Regional Transportation Planning Agencies (RTPAs), cities and counties, transit agencies, and Native American Tribal Governments.

Formula Grants: An additional $12.5 million will be distributed to the MPOs on a formula basis. The formula funds for the MPOs will reflect the same formula used to distribute Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Metropolitan Planning PL funds. See program guidlines for more details.
